After he retired from baseball he went back to school and earned a Ph.D. in genetics and a M.S. in systems engineering from the University of Arizona. One of his paintings " Fugue for the Pepper Players" is in the collection of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and also was featured in Treasures of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
